Day 3, camp on the shores of Laguna Carnicerococha. For a true idea of the enormity of this land, squint your eyes, strain real hard, and try to see the blue speck at the bottom right of the laguna...that was camp. Tito snagged several thick trout from this lake...cooked them to succulent perfection. Sunlight danced on the rock escarpment beyond the laguna, mesmorizing the afternoon.
A distant glacier, one of the largest we saw, trail marker in the foreground.
Negro posing. I wanted him a little more to the left, but he can be very stubborn.
Dropping into the Laguna Viconga valley, Tito and the burros leading the charge.
Dropping into the valley where we made camp.

Would have liked a closer shot of this wild herd of llamas, but that would have required superhuman capabilities which I have yet to acquire. They provide some scale...the mountain they're traversing was a "small" one.

Five days without shower, biting wind, liquid freeze, shivering nights...this hot springs was a godsend. Two arrieros charged with the emergency extraction from the Cordillera of a Czech trekker with a swollen head full of incoming molars joined us that afternoon. As soon as we stripped a storm hit, sky went dark, and the temperature plummeted. The steaming waters soothed the aching muscles and tight joints. The biting sleet and freezing wind gave the experience a rich texture, making it complete.
Tito is the man. He does it all. Guides, loads burros, fishes, butchers, builds ovens, sews, and cooks...his cooking is superb.
