| Cuenca is most famous for its dozens of elegant churches located just around corners of each other. Looking out across the skyline from atop a 3-story building, you are overcome by sparkling domes and piercing belltowers. In contrast, when walking the streets, you are unaware when rounding a corner that you are about to see a towering church materialize toward the heavens. That's the beauty of it. They are so dense in the town center that you are never left without one in your sight, yet rarely subjected to more than one at a time. | |

Iglesia Santa Cenaculo |
Iglesia de Santo Domingo Two of the most ornate steeples in town. This iglesia is stunning when illuminated at night. |

Iglesia de Santo Domingo I was taken by this stone carving above the far right door of Iglesia de Santo Domingo depicting a holy man feeding two stray dogs. I wasn't sure if I should chuckle at it or try to read into the ultimate lesson behind it. |

Iglesia de la Merced In the past, many churches were left with one or no belltowers because of poor budgeting at the beginning of the project. When the time came to begin construction on the second belltower, the funding had run out, and the church was left incomplete. This is one example of that. |
