In 1975, a group of homesick Brazilian UT students needed to get back in touch with their roots, so they put together a small celebration styled after the world renowned Brazilian Carnaval. 27 years later, Austin's Carnaval Brasiliero is one of the most anticipated annual parties, and for good reason.

Each February, thousands of heat-deprived revelers get more costume crazy than Halloween could ever hope for, and samba the chilly night away in minimal clothing and maximum delight. It's sensual, not sexual. It's decadent, it's hedonistic, it's self-indulgent, it's intoxicating, it's energetic bliss. It's a different world where inhibitions are smothered, where dancing is breathing, where wallflowers become stars, and where perfect strangers are momentary best friends.

It's Carnaval. And take my word for it--the photos included here do not even begin to capture the immensity of the vibe. Not even close. But they'll have to do until next year...

Without doubt, two of the BEST costumes of the evening. Well done ladies!

Grupo Saviero provided the evening's music...
...and some samba dancers too!

Austin has a local samba school called Acadêmicos da Opera, and their pulsating drumming kept the vibe bright all night.
