Patagonia Expedition '04
Glaciar Perito Moreno: Gallery 3

"The sounds that it makes are hard to describe. It cracks and pops as years of built up pressure advance at a rate of two meters per day. The decibel level is something I never imagined. When it pops, it sounds like a high caliber rifle shot and you can hear the sound travel across the water into the mountains."

I won't even try to describe in words the experience of Perito Moreno cleaving into Lago Argentino. When this explosion took place, I was so immediately absorbed in the moment that it didn't even occur to me to photograph the event. Dad captured these photos.

Through my zoom lens from an observation deck high above, I'd been watching Mark stand with his arms up, like a statue, camera aimed, for at least half an hour, waiting for just this moment.

Got it! Words come to mind: Commitment, Dedication, Tenacity…
